"Stoneykins" ..& the "Art" of Shading!

Lino SpeedBall Cutters.

Picture
Stoneykins is another Pumpkin Carvers "mecca"  www.stoneykins.com & worth a long visit to view his hundreds of stencils available, view his tutorials & gasp at his & other members of the stoneykins forum galleries..

Whilst Ryans site is in the main "cut through" stencils (though others have simply scraped flesh to accentuate designs) Stoneykins is pretty much for the scrapers of this world, invariably additional tools are recommended a few of which i'll list below.

For those who wish to try without buying, Stoney has around 100 free pumpkin stencils, some cut out some for shading, for 2011 stoney operates on a tiered credit system, ..the more stencils you buy the cheaper it gets!  fast payment & download via paypal, he also has CD's of themed stencil packages.

All these tools are available via craft stores / online, or via dear old stoney himself..

A Lino Speedball Carver is a useful multi-tool to have within reach, shading pumpkins is simply thinking forward with your patterns & scraping evenly at the outer skin in key places (marked by Stoney's pattern print-outs) by using a backlight within the pumpkin you are working on you will have infinitely more confidence to take your shading forward.

Typically I tend to get comfy, stick the pumpkin on my lap, use a petzl headtorch within the pumpkin itself & a camping lantern to hand in order to quickly guage the depth & consistency of my scrapings in order to maintain uniformity when lit, (without having to rise & switch lights out at the wall each time)!

These wire loops fine tune & level the shaded areas quickly & efficiently.

SO YOU'VE SHOWN ME THE TOOLS BUT WHAT THE HECK SHOULD I DO WITH THEM???

I recently found this guy! ..who has put together a few tutorials ..the sound isn't too good but the gentleman covers the basics & gets the idea across (using the above tools) ..BUTTON BELOW OPENS A NEW WINDOW.
